With strong Force 7 winds, gusting to Force 8, the Venturers were surprised when a canoe with a mother and 5 year old son ended up on the beach by Lepe House.
They had been canoeing down the Beaulieu River from Bucklers Hard, and had apparently swept past from their meeting point with the boy's father.
Our Advanced First Aider was quick to recognise that the youngster, who appeared to be asleep, was suffering from hypothermia, and both mother and son required urgent medical attention. If not given prompt treatment, hypothermia could be fatal.
They were taken back to the Venturers Operational Control and given the correct warming up procedure, which led to a quick recovery.
Meanwhile, contact was made with the other parent by mobile phone, but by then his car had the misfortune to have broken down at the rendezvous point, and was he was waiting for the AA.
Eventually, the family was reunited, so that car and canoe were towed back home by the AA.
