Hampshire Schools Athletic Association

28 May 2003

Dear Captain Pearce-Smith,

On behalf of Hampshire Schools Athletic Association and the other Counties involved in the Cross Country match at Gang Warily on 15 February 2003, I would like to thank you and your organisation for providing such superb First Aid Cover.

I genuinely do not know what we would do at such meetings without your support. Your first Aiders' experience at such events and the mobility of your vehicular support gives it an outstanding level of cover at events such as cross country. Where safety is paramount it is comforting to know that, with your support, we have excellent First Aid cover on the day.

Once again, can I thank you and your organisation for the support given to Hampshire Schools in allowing us to provide sporting opportunities for such a large number of young athletes.

Yours sincerely,

Geoff Cunliffe
(Hon Secretary Hampshire Schools Athletic Association).

VENTURERS SEAMANSHIP

Last Saturday afternoon (June 19th 2000) during the "Round the island Race", a large trimaran collided with a small yacht and one of the floats of the trimaran was driven straight through the coachroof of the yacht. The vessels could not be separated while they were at sea as there was a strong wind and fairly rough sea at the time.

The two vessels were taken in tow by a rescue launch and towed up the Lymington River to the safety of the Yacht Haven. The operation took well over two hours and I happened to be on the Yacht Haven when the vessels were brought in.

I was very impressed with the way this extraordinarily difficult tow was carried out under the prevailing conditions. When the boats came alongside I was astonished to see that the rescue craft was one of the Venturers' boats and that the tow had been effected by two boys, and I hope they will not feel insulted if I so term them, aged about 16 and 17. They displayed the highest standards of seamanship, made light of the rescue they had undertaken and promptly refueled their boat ready to return to the Solent for further rescue work if needed.

I do not think any praise is too high for this organisation and I trust that due notice will have been taken of this very courageous act. I know their organisation is often hard pressed for money, is it too much to hope that they may be able to collect salvage in this case?

Salisbury & South Wilts Agricultural Show
May 29 1999

On land we provided First Aid and Ambulance safety cover for public events such as the Salisbury and South Wilts Agricultural Show. A letter from the show secretary highlighted the importance of providing this sort of service. In the letter, Mrs Margaret Brain wrote, "Many traditional country happenings could not take place without people like yourselves."

WHAT YACHTSMEN HAVE SAID

"I cannot express my thanks in words that fully reflect my feelings, but I am grateful for your swift and professional action in response to my "MAY DAY". There is no doubt my younger son was suffering and your speedy response helped get him to safety".

"Your service deserves the highest praise on a number of accounts. Our plight was observed remarkably quickly; after we grounded the patrol boat arrived on the scene very quickly and the rescue was carried out calmly with efficiency and effectiveness".

Tailpiece - ONLY A DOG!

We would like to put on record our thanks to the members of the League of Venturers Sea Rescue Service at Lepe Beach.

While walking our golden retrievers near the Coastguard Cottages on July 6th one jumped into the river which flows under the road and into the sea. It swam towards the entrance of the water tunnel and was carried by the current to the sea outlet where there is a grid. The dog was trapped here and couldn't be released through the grid.

The boys of the League of Venturers were immediately on the spot in wet suits and went under the road in fast flowing deep water and finally managed to drag 'Marcus' to the bank.

'Only a dog'., yes, but important to us and it could have been a child.
